ROOSTER 1995-2010 (HIS CHEWING THE CHRISTMAS WRAPPING PAPER RITUAL)

ROOSTER 1995-2010 (HIS CHEWING THE CHRISTMAS WRAPPING PAPER RITUAL)
I REMEMBER BACK IN MID DECEMBER OF 1995, DALE CALLING ME IN TO THE BEDROOM TO WATCH SOMETHING ON TV. I LAYED ACROSS THE BED AS THE VIDEO PLAYED. THERE WAS DALE IN SOMEONES BASEMENT WITH CHILDREN RUNNING ALL AROUND, I'M THINKING WHAT IS THIS ABOUT. IN THE CENTER OF THE ROOM WAS A HUGE BOX WRAPPED IN GREEN, DALE CONTINUED ON IN THE VIDEO SAYING HE WASN'T SURE WHAT TO GET ME FOR CHRISTMAS SO HERE WERE SOME OF MY CHOICES. HE REMOVED THE LID TO THE BOX AND ALL I SAW WERE LITTLE BOBBING GOLDEN RETEIVER HEADS, ALL AS CUTE AS COULD BE. I WAS CONFUSED AS WE HAD DISCUSSED NO MORE DOGS AFTER I LOST MY 17 YEAR OLD GOLDEN PYRITE, WE HAD JUST OPENED A NEW STORE AND OUR LIVES WERE CRAZY AND DALE STILL HAD HIS TWO WOLVES. DALE WOULD PICK EACH PUPPY UP AND SAY NO YOU'RE NOT THE ONE, AND THAT CONTINUED ON FOR FIVE OR SIX PUPPIES AND THEN HE PULLED THIS LITTLE GUY WITH A NAME TAG AS BIG AS HE WAS, THE TAG SAID ROOSTER, DALE STATED THIS IS THE ONE.(I HAD WATCHED A DOG SHOW AND SAW A LITTLE PUG NAMED ROOSTER AND SAID IF I EVER GET ANOTHER DOG I WANT TO NAME HIM ROOSTER, DALE REMEMBERED)SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS WE WENT TO VISIT ROOSTER, HE WAS TO YOUNG TO BRING HOME BEFORE CHRISTMAS. WHEN I MET HIM HE WAS BY HIMSELF PLAYING WITH A RIBBON TOTALLY IGNORING ME AND EVERTHING ELSE. THIS LITTLE GIRL PUPPY THERE WOULD NOT LEAVE ME ALONE, JUMPING AND TUGGING AT ME, I WAS DRAWN TO HER. DALE SAID IF YOU WANT HER INSTEAD WE CAN SWITCH, BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW ROOSTER PICKED US, I DID NOT PICK HIM. WITH THOSE WORDS WE WENT BACK A WEEK LATER AND BROUGHT ROOSTER HOME TO THE FARMHOUSE. HE WAS A BUNDLE OF JOY, VERY INDEPENDENT, BUT STILL LOVING. HE GREW TO BE A EXCELLENT CATCH OF THE TENNIS BALL,AND SNOWBALLS IN THE WINTER TIME, HARDLY EVER MISSING ANY, HE ADORED HIS STUFFED ANIMALS AND ALWAYS HAD ONE IN HIS MOUTH AT ALL TIMES. THEN HE GOT INTERESTED IN ROCKS, THERE WERE ROCKS EVERYWHERE, IN THE HOUSE, ON THE LAWN(SOME THAT WENT THROUGH THE LAWN MOWER AND BROKE WINDOWS). I REMEMBER HIM PUTTING ROCKS ON ANYONES SHOES WHO STOOD STILL LONG ENOUGH, AS HE KNEW THE ROCK WAS GOING TO MOVE WHEN THAT PERSON STEPPED . WHILE RESTORING THE HOUSE HERE HE WOULD PUT ROCKS ON THE BOARDS AS THE CARPENTERS WERE SAWING BECAUSE HE KNEW THEY WOULD MOVE OR FALL SO HE COULD RUSH AND GET THEM. IT WAS HIS LITTLE GAME THAT HE PLAYED BY HIMSELF. HE LOVE A GOOD PARTY AND WAS QUITE THE HOST. EVERY YEAR WE WOULD THROW A SUMMER PARTY WITH A HUNDRED OR SO GUESTS. WE WOULD LET ROOSTER OUT(WITH A HAND WRITTEN NOTE STAPLED TO THE TOP OF HIS COLLAR "I'M NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY WITH ROCKS"). HE WOULD GREET THEM ALL AND HE WOULD COME TO FIND US "OCCASIONALL" TO SEE WHAT WE WERE DOING. WE WOULD GIVE ALL OUR GUEST GLOW NECKLACES TO WEAR AFTER THE SUN SET, BY THE END OF THE EVENING ROOSTER WOULD BE WEARING THIRTY OR SO AROUND HIS NECK AN ALL YOU COULD SEE WAS THIS RAINBOW OF COLOR SWIMMING IN THE POND. I REMEMBER HIM COMING UP TO OUR NEIGHBOR NETTY AT ONE PARTY AND RESTING BESIDE HER WHERE HE JUST FELL ASLEEP IN THE SITTING POSITION NEXT TO HER. HE WAS A LOVER OF ITALIAN FOOD, ANYTHING WITH TOMATOE SAUCE HE ADORED. IF WE LEFT A PIZZA BOX ON THE COUNTER HE WOULD NOT COME TO BED UNTIL WE THREW IT AWAY AND IT WAS OUT OF SITE. HE CHASED THE NEIGHBORS DOG CRICKET HOME EVERY CHANCE HE HAD FOR YEARS. YOU JUST HAD TO SAY THE CRICKET AND HE WOULD START LOOKING FOR HER, I THINK IT REALLY WAS A SILENT CRUSH HE HAD ON HER. AS HE GOT OLDER HIS PERSONALITY WAS GREW EVEN MORE, HE GOT VERY VERBAL IN LETTING US KNOW WHEN HE WAS HUNGRY OR WANTED SOMETHING. I KNOW WHEN WE BOUGHT THE NEW HOUSE IN MAINE I THOUGHT THE TRIPS WOULD BE TOO MUCH FOR THE OLD MAN, BUT WE TOOK HIM AND HE FIT RIGHT IN, EVERY TIME HE WENT BACK HE HAD HIS OWN ADJENDA, JUST AS LONG AS WE WERE THERE HE WAS FINE.I LOVE TELLING THESE STORIES OF ROOSTER BECAUSE I WANT TO KEEP HIS MEMORY ALIVE.HE WAS SPECIAL AND I THANK HIM FOR GIVING FOR FIFTEEN YEARS AND MOST OF ALL CHOOSING US. ROOSTER I LOVE YOU.

GALVANIZED IS GOOD

GALVANIZED IS GOOD
I BOUGHT THIS GALVANIZED METAL CUPBOARD LAST FALL AND IT RESIDES IN THE LIVING ROOM IN SOUTHERN MAINE. IT STANDS ABOUT FIVE FEET TALL AND THE PATINA IS INCREDIBLE. I NEVER KNEW HOW MUCH GRAY AND PALE YELLOW COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER, AND WITH THE TOUCHES OF GREEN IN THE LIVING ROOM IT COULDN'T BE MORE PERFECT. THE CUPBOARD CAME FROM A NAVAL SHIP YARD WHERE THEY USED TO BUILD SHIPS. THIS CUPBOARD WAS HAND MADE AND MOST LIKELY KEPT TOOLS IN IT. WHAT A FIND!

WE NEVER GET THERE IN THE WINTER, BUT WE DID SPEND ONE CHRISTMAS THERE THE FIRST YEAR WE BOUGHT IT. OUR NEIGHBORS MATT AND CHRISSY WATCH FOR US AND EVEN HANG A WREATH ON THE DOOR EVERY HOLIDAY SEASON. THANKS YOU GUYS!

WE LOVE OUR HOUSE WAY UP. WE DON'T GET THERE MUCH BUT WHEN WE DO IT IS WONDERFUL. I HAVE ALL MY FAMILY PRIMITIVE ANTIQUES HERE. I STILL LOVE PRIMITIVES AND THEY REALLY FIT HERE SINCE THE HOUSE IS ALL ORIGINAL AND UNTOUCHED, LIKE WALKING BACK IN TIME. WHAT A FIND, AND ON THE WATER TOO, HOW LUCKY ARE WE. WE TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED.

SITTING WAY UP ON A HILL AND BUILT IN 1830 ON A HUGE GRANITE BOULDER SITS OUR LITTLE ANTIQUE CAPE HOUSE. A STONE WALK WAY LEADS YOU FROM THE DRIVE UP AND UP AND STILL UP TILL YOU GET THERE. A VERY PRIVATE SETTING WITH NO NEIGHBORS, JUST QUIET WOODS AND ONLY TEN MINUTES FROM THE BEACH. YOU WONDER WHY WE SPEND SO MUCH TIME THERE, IT'S LIKE LIVING IN A TREE HOUSE.

GRAY SKIES, GRAY CHAIRS

GRAY SKIES, GRAY CHAIRS
I BOUGHT THESE CHAIRS LAST SUMMER. THEY ARE REPRODUCTION CHIPPENDALE AND WERE A FORMAL DARK MAHOGANY IN COLOR WITH TAPESTRY SEATS. THAT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME BUT I DID SEE THROUGH ALL THAT AND KNEW THEY WOULD BE GREAT DINING ROOM CHAIRS IN SOUTHERN MAINE. WITH A ROUGH SAND I PAINTED THEM GRAY, ONLY ONE THICK COAT AND WHEN DRY SANDED AREAS WHERE WORNS AREAS WOULD BE. THE FINISHING TOUCH IS FRENCH LINEN ON THE CHAIR SEATS, JUST STAPLED ON. I BOUGHT THIS SET OF SIX CHAIRS FOR ABOUT FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS AND SINCE HAVE SEEN SIMILAR CHAIRS IN UPSCALE SHOPS FOR THREE HUNDRED A CHAIR. I GUESS WHAT I'M SAYING IS, DON'T OVER LOOK THE OBVIOUS, ITS USUALLY RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. DON'T LET IT BITE YOU!

KNOCK KNOCK, WHO'S THERE?

KNOCK KNOCK, WHO'S THERE?
I LOVE THIS OLD APPLE GREEN DOOR. IT WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR FOR THE SUMMER HOUSE'S LIVING ROOM COLOR SCHEME. JUST LEANED AGAINST THE WALL WITH AN OLD HALF ROUND WINDOW LOUVER ATTACHED TO ITS TOP, IT MAKES QUITE A STATEMENT, AND A GOOD PLACE TO HANG MORE ART. BE WHIMSICAL WITH YOUR DECORATING, NOTHING IS WRITTEN IN STONE.

OUR SOUTHERN MAINE HOUSE SITS IN THE WOODS, UP ON TOP OF A HILL AND HAS A LITTLE HIKE UP TO IT.. WE CREATED THIS SWEET SITTING AREA ON THE WAY. THE CHAIRS ARE VINTAGE 1950'S, CROME AND LEATERETTE (YES I LEAVE THEM OUT ALL SUMMER). THE WHITE COLUM CREATES A GREAT FOCAL FROM THE DISTANT AND LETS YOU KNOW YOU ARE HALF WAY THERE. RESTING ON TOP OF IT IS A VINTAGE GLASS FISHERMANS GLOBE. SURROUNDED IN THE SHADE ARE RICH GREEN TONES FROM THE ALWAYS HAPPY HOSTA PLANTS.

GITTY UP!
ROCKING HORSES HAVE ALWAYS TUGGED AT MY HEART STRINGS. I HAVE COLLECTED QUITE A FEW OVER THE YEARS. YOU KNOW THE ONES THAT HAVE LOST THEIR PAINT, MANES AND TALES. I LOVE THE STORIES THE HAVE TO TELL. WHAT A GOOD PLACE PLOP AN OCCASIONAL BEAR EVERY NOW AND THEN TOO. I HAVE THEM ON DINING ROOM TABLES, ARMOURS, AND ON THE FLOOR, JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE I CAN FIT ONE. IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO GET ONE OF THESE WONDERFUL FOLK ART HORSES DON'T HESITATE!

LITTLE PAINTNGS ALL IN A ROW

LITTLE PAINTNGS ALL IN A ROW
I PAINTED ALOT OF THESE LITTLE PAINTINGS LAST SUMMER, AND I
THEN THOUGHT NOW WHAT. MY ART IS IN SEVERAL SHOPS AROUND MAINE. BUT I LOVED THESE AND WANTED TO KEEP THEM. I HAD SOME EXTRA WALL SPACE TO FILL SO I JUST HUNG THEM IN A GROUPING, IN A ROW. IT IS VERY EFFECTIVE AND I LOVE THE LOOK. ALL STUDY ON HORIZONS YET DIFFERENT IN COLORS AND MOODS. TRY GROUPING YOUR ART TOGETHER. YOU CAN DO IT BY SUBJECT, BY FRAME STYLE OR COLOR, OR JUST MIX 'EM UP. HAVE FUN WITH IT AND REMEMBER NOT TO TAKE DECORATING TOO SERIOUSLY.

WHITES RIGHT FOR ME, AND THE SEASCAPE MURAL IS JUST DIVINE.

WHITES RIGHT FOR ME, AND THE SEASCAPE MURAL IS JUST DIVINE.
I'M STILL LOVING THOSE WASHED PAINTER CLOTH SLIP COVERS IN THE DEN, JUST TIMELESS. I PAINTED THE MURAL IN THE VERMONT HOUSE JUST AFTER WE FINISHED THE RESTORATION THERE. IT ADDS A LITTLE COLOR AND REMINDS ME WHERE I REALLY LIKE TO BE, BY THE SEA.

SHELVES AREN'T JUST FOR BOOKS ANYMORE!
WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR NEW HOUSE IN MAINE, I SAW THE WALL OF CUSTOM BOOK SHELVES IN THE LIVINGROOM AND INSTANTLY THOUGHT IRONSTONE PLATES. PLACED BY DIFFERENT SHADES OF MOTTLED WHITES, NO SPECIFIC PLATE DESIGNS, JUST ALL LINED UP IN A ROW, AS A HUGE WORK OF ART. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I DID LAST SUMMER WHEN WE CLOSED ON THE HOUSE. IT REALLY MAKES A SIMPLE UNCLUTTERED STATEMENT AND IT'S GREAT TO HAVE A COLLECTION THAT IS DEAR TO ME CLOSE BY AND IN SIGHT.

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL
I ALWAYS LEAN, VERY RARELY HANG A MIRROR ON THE WALL! IT CREATES A MORE OF A CASUAL FEEL AND TENDS TO HAVE A MORE CURRENT LOOK. IN THE FOYER IN VERMONT I HAVE A GOLD GILT MIRROR THAT SCREAMES FORMAL. TO TONE IT DOWN A NOTCH OR TWO I PLACED ONE OF MY OIL PAINTNGS IN THE MIRROR. I JUST LEANED IT AGAINST THE GLASS AND IT STAYED FINE. I LOVE THE LOOK. SO PLAY WITH YOUR OBJECTS, YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT CREATE. I HAVEN'T HUNG PAINTINGS ON THE CEILING YET, HUMM, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!

DON'T OVERLOOK COMFY!

SHINEY AND NEW WAS NEVER FOR ME. I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED PAST THE NORMAL AND FOUND A LOVE FOR THINGS FORGOTTEN OR SET ASIDE. THIS OLD LEATHER CHAIR AND PILLOW HAVE LISTENED TO MANY STORIES BEING TOLD WHILE OCCUPIED. LET THE STORIES CONTINUE AND ENJOY THE PAST, EVEN IF IT IS WORN AND TATTERED. THIS CHAIR LIVES IN THE A SUMMER HOUSE THAT IS OWNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER I ALWAYS WORK WITH. GOOD JOB KINDRA FOR SAVING A LIFE!

  1. It's perfect! (oops! did I just say that?!) Actually, speaking of... I found your blog through Marjolijn from Something White, in Belgium. She has a picture of a copy of your book and a saying of yours. The quote is, "perfect is boring." This is funny because, we too, live in Vermont in an old house with gorgeous old barns. I shared this quote with my husband because I'm always having to fight the new house syndrome that he seems to have. (i.e. he has a knack for turning old houses into something that looks new - I think that I'm rubbing off on him though.) Anyway, when I told him, he replied, "oh, is that why I never have a moments peace here?!" In his defense, however, he's OLD Vermonter (the King gave his family the land) and he does truly love his old barns!!! He just doesn't want them to fall down!

On another note, (and I AM sorry - I leave mammoth comments, sometimes) we absolutely love maritime history. I wanted to get my husband a ship in a bottle this Christmas but we are on the smaller end of a budget. Oh, the gorgeous crafts that I saw but couldn't afford. Why didn't I think of this????? I think that I am going to shamelessly copy you. It's just TOO brilliant!

I'm so happy that I came to visit.

    Love, Katy Noelle

  2. How funny that the person above posted about the Ships in a Bottle and I was going to comment on them too. Very charming and creative. And I love the ironstone and also loved the Shell Shock. But I love all your pictures really and particularly enjoy your dogs. Dogs are wonderful. Your book remains my favorite of all my books. I hope you do another book.
